Linking
Ring Review (Part 6):
Comedy
Magic on the Magic Land of Allakazam, in conjunction
with Rebo, is one of the show’s great strengths. Effects
involve small and large magic – the Tarbell Paper
Box, Rabbit from Newspaper, Snake Basket, and Grant’s
Victory Cartons. To the show’s credit, Rebo is the
“sucker” in effects like Run-Rabbit-Run, not
the studio audience.

Audience participation effects, in which
Mark Wilson and Nani Darnell perform magic in the middle
of the studio audience or use volunteers on stage, are common.
(The cast had a knack for involving children, for treating
them with the greatest of courtesy, and for letting the
children perform the magic – these are among the greatest
lessons that can be learned from these DVDs.) With help
from a bevy of volunteers, Wilson and Darnell perform classics
and near-classics with startling originality. For example,
Wilson’s combination of the Impossible Knot, Vanishing
Knot, and Sliding Knot while surrounded by children is forever
etched in my mind, even 40 years later.

On a personal level, I can think of nothing in my youth
that gave me such a sense of joy and wonder, week after
week, as this program. Nor can I recall anything that gave
me as much pleasure for years afterward, as I reconstructed
its scenes in my memory. The success of this show on a national
level would suggest to me that I am not alone. Highest recommendation.
