Linking Ring Review (Part 5):

Stage and platform magic abound on these shows. The first episode highlights a Wilson signature effect, the Vanishing Cane in Newspaper. Every show contains magic with a menagerie of animals. Basil the Baffling Bunny makes a frequent magical appearance. From a small Drum Tube, the cast produces an enormous load of silks, doves, and, with a gasp from the audience, a squawking duck. Animals appear from balloons, tubs, boxes, cages, and newspapers. Gertrude the Glorious Guinea Pig is transported to a Nest of Boxes. A Dancing Handkerchief waltzes across the stage. Episodes are filled with magic using canes, clocks, balloons, rings, eggs, newspapers, banners, and liquids. The famous and ubiquitous Allakazam Hat makes its début appearance in the second show.

Stage and platform magic is used to sell the sponsor’s products. In these commercials the team introduces the sponsor’s products, slogans, and brand names in innovative magical ways. Products appear, disappear, and float about. These commercial effects are a rich source of ideas for performers who wish to “sell” with magic or send a “message.”

Manipulation and Close-up routines are performed in every Allakazam show. Wilson conjures with thimbles, billiard balls, cards, ropes, silks, and rings. He presents close-up magic under the most stringent of conditions, with the camera hovering only inches from his hands. His simple routine with large colored marbles (stretching one marble into two, making them appear and travel invisibly) is an understated masterpiece. With a small boy on the stage, his Paper Cone and Balls is a delight. Highest Recommendation.
