Linking Ring Review (Part 3):

The Magic Land of Allakazam DVDs contain an enormous amount of magic. Over the four years and three months that the series aired, Mark Wilson and his company must have performed several thousand magic effects, all of them very visual and all the product of a highly-focused creative team. In some way, every effect is unique, and astute viewers will notice how “tricks” can be elevated to the status of magical art when attention is given to theatrical subtleties. The following are descriptions of only a small portion of what you see in the first 24 episodes.

Major illusions are often performed under “test” conditions involving a small boy or girl from the audience. Many are one-of-a-kind. The illusions include Wilson’s innovative Doll’s House, a precipitous Aga levitation, Baking Basil’s Birthday Cake (which magically produces Nani), Nani suddenly vanishes in the giant Dizzy Limit, and instantly reappears in the Crystal Casket, the Tip-Over Box, the Costume Trunk, the Canvas Covered Box, the Modern Cabinet, and Dora the Dancing Doll. Constructed by John Gaughan, the latter is a masterpiece of mechanical construction, beauty, and mystery.

Their Asrah Levitation concludes with an unexpected exchange at the end (a theatrical touch such as this, appended to an already near-perfect illusion, elevated The Magic Land of Allakazam into the realm of pure art). Their Human Die Box with Rebo as the die is a comic masterpiece full of psychological red herrings. Their Broom Suspension could serve as a lesson in dramatic scene construction. Highest Recommendation.

– Elson Bihm, Linking Ring Review (continued on next volume)
